On Wednesday, 22nd January, the Waterford Schools Cross Country Championships began in Dungarvan. This was the first cross-country race for many of the Pres students participating.
The minor girls (under 14s) who ran were Lucy, Eve, Grace, Jodie, and Lily Grace. Daisy in 2nd year ran for the junior girls (under 16s), and Vera, Maya, and Ariana ran for the senior girls (under 17s). Minors ran 1500 metres, juniors ran 2 kilometres, and seniors ran 3 kilometres.
The girls had trained hard and ran excellently on the big day. In 1st year, Lucy came in 3rd place in the minor girls' athletics, and in 2nd year, Daisy came in 12th place. This day was a huge success for our school! Go team, Pres!
Just one week later, on Thursday, 30th January, another cross-country race took place in Carriganore. First years, Lucy, Eve, and Abbie ran. Lucy came 7th and qualified for Munster!
Athletics coach Ms. Dermody says, “The girls ran excellently. Good luck to Lucy, who qualified for Munster. We're proud of how much the girls have achieved so far.”
On the 14th of February, Lucy participated in the Munster Cross Country Championships in Cork. Lucy ran excellently and finished 16th, slightly missing out on qualifying for the national championships by just one place. She ran an incredible race in very rainy and muddy conditions!
It’s been a busy few weeks for the girls who took part in the Cross-Country Championships, and the Pres is excited for what is yet to come for members of the athletics teams!
